Do you need commission software?

Commission software pays off when the cost of calculating, checking and disputing payouts by hand outgrows the cost of a tool. Below that point, a well-built spreadsheet is the better answer — and we will say so.

Signals that a spreadsheet is no longer enough

What to check before buying

  1. Data source: which CRM, billing and HRIS systems connect natively, and how corrections flow back.
  2. Plan expressiveness: can it express your exact rules (marginal vs retroactive tiers, boundary inclusivity, clawback eligibility) without workarounds? Test with your hardest real case.
  3. Transparency for reps: can a rep see the line-by-line calculation behind each payout?
  4. Auditability: versioned plans, approvals, change logs and exports.
  5. Total cost: licence per payee, platform fees, implementation and admin time.
  6. Security and compliance: ask for documentation rather than relying on badges.

How the suggestion works

The questionnaire applies fixed thresholds — product assumptions, not market benchmarks: from 25 payees, 2 plans or 2 complexity signals we suggest a lightweight tool; from 100 payees or 5 plans a mid-market platform; from 500 payees (or 250 with audit requirements) an enterprise platform.
